I have been on holiday in Brittany with the family now for 12 days and I get L’Equipe everyday.
Not that I can read French very well, but you get the flavour of everything. I have also been re-reading the brilliant ‘In Search of Robert Millar’ book again whilst here and even in here they are questioning where the next French Champion will come from.
Now I know the TdF has finished and it is 3-4 weeks of total cycling overload but in L’Equipe there is more given over to Basketball than the current Tour of Poland. Now I know the Tour of Poland isn’t highly ranked but there is no promotion whatsoever of any of the Criteriums that are going on. They just don’t seem to want to promote the regional cycling scene at all.
I maybe wrong but that’s how it appears to me.
Anyway, this is a picture of, Dimitri Champion, the current 2009 French Champion.
He ‘won’ the l’Etape du Tour last month, I didn’t relaise it was a race but heyho……he is team are based just down the road from where I am staying. . . .
As the train left Avignon, the summit of Ventoux seemed to follow me home. . . . .
Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen picked their all time English speaking tour team and Tom made both teams. Phil chose: Armstrong (Team Leader), Robert Millar (Climber), Mark Cavendish (Sprinter), Tommy Simpson, Phil Anderson, Sean Kelly, Steve Bauer, Brian Robinson & Chris Boardman.
Paul chose: Armstrong (Team Leader), Robert Millar (Climber), Mark Cavendish (Sprinter), Tommy Simpson, Phil Anderson, Sean Kelly, Barry Hoban, Bradley Wiggins and Sean Yates.
Today is the 42nd anniversary of the passing of Britain’s last Cycling Road Race World Champion. Not forgotten.
